| I heard that Sandra had a daughter named Cassandra that she adopted. Is this true? | |||||||||
| Sandra replies: No, that's not true. How do these stories get started?! | |||||||||

| Started to listen to Caramelo on an e-audio version while also reading parts at the same time. You have nailed the dialogue in my home when I was growing up with 7 brothers and sister. I have ordered most of your back catalogue to share with them. As an artist (photographer) I respect when someone else can put What others think into a cohesive and fun package. BTW your reading of the book is very cool. Thanks, Raphael | |||||||||

| Dear Ms. Cisneros, It was such a thrill to meet you last night when you visited Hickory and Lenoir-Rhyne University. Your words are powerful tools for healing, and yesterday as you read "Have You Seen Marie?" I felt as if I was being counseled. I also felt such an affinity for you simply because you remind me of one of my sweetest mentors and friends. Today I found out that the cancer she has been struggling with will be terminal, and she has two months to live. I anticipate the release of "Have You Seen Marie?" all the more now. I wish last night I could have seen beyond my excitement to think to have you write your inscription to her rather than myself. Know that your words are not only powerful, but make meaning and spread peace and hope even through suffering. You are a beautiful woman, inside and out, and I am so thankful for the work you do as a writer. May you continue to be blessed in your future endeavors with every "next" novel you are working on. Sincerely, Lydia Gillespie | |||||||||

| Dear Ms. Cisneros, we met may year ago, back in 1995 or 6 at NCTE, the National Council of Teachers of English, or Illinois Association of Teachers of English, when you were a keynote speaker, and you gave me your copy of "Woman Hollering Creek" which you read from that nite. I still have it! In fact, I'm giving an address tomorrow at a middle school, where I'm reading from both "House on Mango" and "Woman Hollering" to show how you inspired my career as an English professor. Thank you! | |||||||||

| My class is reading House on Mango and love the book. We are all questiong why Sally marries a marshmellow salesman? Why marshmellows? | |||||||||
| Sandra replies: I don't know! It just seemed right for Sally. (When you're writing a story, you have to listen to what the characters tell you.) People marry for a lot of strange reasons, many of them very bad. Marrying a man who sells marshmallows doesn't seem like a bad choice, does it? Maybe Sally thought he would be soft and sweet. | |||||||||

| Hi Sandra, I was one of the people in the audience when you met with teachers at CSU Fresno in Feb. As you spoke, I felt you were talking directly to me about the necessity of all of us practicing our art, taking care of ourselves. Thank you -- because of your inspiring words, I'm back to writing, back to doing what my soul calls. | |||||||||

| Thank you for speaking at Fresno State this afternoon. It was one of the best events I have attended. I am a recently retired English teacher and for the past 11 years I tutored after school. My students were reading House on Mango Street and since I had never read it, I did and I loved it. I got to know your characters the way I knew Saroyan's when as a young girl I read My Name is Aram. Thank you for sharing your stories. | |||||||||

| Hi Sandra, From the moment I read The House on Mango Street as a bachelor student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I knew I was in love with your work. Growing up in an Indian household trying to fuse two extremely different cultures created a very unique experience, which you have essentially captured for me on multiple levels. Now, as a Language Arts teacher in Chicago Public Schools, I can only hope my students can feel a drop of the emotion you convey so eloquently with your style. Cheers to you, and thanks for pioneering the first and second generation female American voice. | |||||||||

| I just wanted to say thank you! I had a Latina lit class and was assigned Caramelo to read. Your writing is so touching and heart felt. I have read the rest of your works now and have copies on my "special" book case! Your next to greats like Orwell and Cather! | |||||||||

| Hi! I'm writing to you from Switzerland to tell you my students and I have studied the House on Mango street and they have done some creative writing: they chose a vignette each and wrote a continuation. We are going to make a little booklet of the texts and the students would really love to be able to send you one. Please tell me if this possible, I'd be very grateful.Thank you very much for your help. | |||||||||

| Dear Cisneros, I wanted to thank you for writing the book The House on Mango Street. I have never felt like other people understand me as much as I do now. I now relize that just because I am having a hard time in life now I can still make more of my life in the future. Your book is beautiful, and I love every story inside it. I will treasure it forever. | |||||||||
